Participatory design issues and concerns

A design team’s interactions with customers may often be limited to only the early research and late evaluation phases of the design process, while the work in between – when ideas are being generated – is left to the internal team alone. Participatory design is an integration of three interdisciplinary concerns that span research and practice: "the politics of design; the nature of participation; and method, tools and techniques for participation" (Kensing & Blomberg 1998). The purpose of this article is to describe the ethical issues arising out of participatory action research (PAR), on the basis of both an empirical study and the research literature, and to discuss how to deal with these issues. The data consist of the experiences and results of three phases of PAR … A widely discussed model for engaging communities is community-based participatory research (CBPR) [3]. This model pairs academic researchers and community members; both partners should have active roles in shaping the research’s aims, design, and implementation.

The term is used in a variety of fields e.g. software design, urban design, architecture, landscape architecture, product design, sustainability, graphic design, planning, and even medicine as Participatory design is an approach to design strategy that brings customers into the heart of the design process. Democracy in organization requires a debate about norms, values and language encapsulated in the information systems. The participatory design approaches address this issue by proposing a democratic empowerment for users during design phase of projects. In their paper, "Participatory Design: Issues and Concerns," Finn Kensing and Jeanette Blomberg discuss two primary aspects to this work. "Increasingly, ethnographically-inspired fieldwork techniques are being integrated with more traditional PD techniques (Blomberg et al., 1996; Bødker, 1996; Beyer and Holtzblatt, 1997, Kensing et al., forthcoming). Like design ethnographers, participatory design researchers are faced with the challenge of re-imagining their practice in an increasingly global and digital world. In ”Design Matters in Participatory Design” Bannon and Ehn [25] outline some of the challenges contemporary participatory design faces as technology The difficulty in transposing this notion of participatory design towards traditional architectural practice is that existing processes have evolved over time to be inherently technical; architects move along the prescribed path to navigate their available time, budget, and design intent.
